Great Salt Lake - Tooele County - 4,203 ft. - Low-Point Rank: 8th

Tooele County was only a short walk from Salt Lake County, and this time we decided to at least get our feet wet.  We wandered out into the lake about 100 yards and it was still only half way up our calves.  I don’t know how far we would have had to walk just to get into deep enough water to float. It seemed to go forever.

The lake seamlessly blended into the sky in the distance.  We couldn’t tell where one ended and the other began.

There was a girl there with some photographers.  She was dressed in a formal gown and was standing on a small platform that made her look like she was walking on the water.  I did entertain the evil thought of creating some kind of a wave but I’m not that mean.....in front of my family.

I also had to taste the water just to see if it was even salty....and oh boy it was.  It was so salty it made my body shudder.  I couldn’t get rid of the taste. And of course, I had to make the rest of the family taste it too.  They didn’t really want to but all it took was a slight touch to their lips when they weren't prepared and they couldn’t escape the taste either.  The Great Salt Lake ranges in salinity anywhere from 5% to 27% depending on location.  Compared to the Ocean’s 3.5%, it’s toxic. I could see the salt stains on my arms where some of the water had splashed and then evaporated.

KSL recently had a news story about a week ago that said the water levels of the Great Salt Lake are hitting their lowest point since the early 1960's. They reported that many of the boats in the marinas are trapped by the low water. We did notice how far the water had receded. So I guess we actually touched a low point that possibly hadn't been seen in decades.

After cleaning up and putting our shoes on, we headed back to the hotel.  We did take a minute to stop and feed the seagulls the rest of our bagels.  When we had visited Antelope Island several years ago, we had fed some seagulls too.  They must have never seen bread before because they were vicious.  They would try to take the food right out of my arms and left me caked in their feces.  The seagulls on this day were much better behaved....I was suprisingly disappointed.

We had hoped to complete about 11 low points...but we only got 4 but we’ll get another two tomorrow: Utah and Wasatch.  I don’t regret only getting 4.  It was nice to take our time, explore, see the vistas.....and taste the salt.
